Grinding Hardwood Stumps in King

By the time the grass at Central Park greens up each spring, the oak or hickory stump left by winter tree work is the last thing in a King lawn a mower still has to steer around. We grind it to chips under the turf in one visit, surface roots included, and rake the spot level before we leave.

Free, no-obligation estimates. We answer the phone or call back the same working day.

Stump grinding in King, NC

Tommy's Stump Grinding grinds tree stumps in King below grade and rakes the spoil back level, in one visit. Hardwood is the rule here more than the exception: a wide oak or hickory stump holds the carbide teeth longer than a pine of the same width, so the wheel takes thinner bites and more of them, and it takes the "root flare" at the base along with the trunk. All of it ends up six to twelve inches under the turf, where grass closes over the spot within a season or two.

The typical King house dates from the middle of the 1980s, which is long enough for the trees that went in with it to have grown up, and for a few to have come down and left a wide stump in the front lawn. Around three in five of the homes here are lived in by their owners, and it is usually the owner who picks up the phone, after a summer of mowing around it. Whatever the yard, the visit ends the same way: the "spoil" raked back into the hole, the surface smoothed flat and the lawn ready for seed. What one visit takes in is next.

What one visit covers

A visit takes the low cut, the grind through the root flare and below grade, and the rake back. One visit runs in a fixed order.

  1. Low cutA stump still standing tall is sawn down close to the turf first, the "low cut", so the wheel does not spend its first passes on trunk.
  2. Utility locateThe lines under the yard are marked before the machine comes, on the free 811 ticket, and nothing is ground until they are.
  3. Grind below gradeThe wheel shaves the stump, its root flare and the surface roots to chips until every part of it sits "below grade".
  4. Rake levelThe chips and soil go back into the hole and are smoothed off flush with the lawn, or hauled away when that is what you asked for.

Tommy's Stump Grinding uses the plain words for the whole of that, stump removal, and every part of the job is set out in full on our page on stump removal. Where in King the machine can get to is the next question.

The parts of King the machine reaches

The work is done across King, in house yards and on managed grounds alike, wherever the machine walks to the stump. The grinder rides on rubber tracks and is narrow enough for a standard gate, so a fenced back yard in Quail Run or Coventry Forest is reached the same way as an open front lawn in Arlington Place, and the tracks leave the turf unrutted on the way in.

Residential work is a single stump for a homeowner in Brentwood or Oakmont. Commercial work is the run of stumps along a drive or across a common area for whoever manages the grounds, and the machine is the same for both. If the only way to the stump is down a bank the tracks cannot hold, we say so on the call rather than in the yard. What is left once the machine rolls off comes next.

What the job leaves on the spot

The job leaves a level, filled spot and the deeper roots in the soil to decay. For a lawn the wheel stops six to twelve inches under the surface, and the hole is refilled with its own "chip-and-soil" mix and raked flat, the loose debris cleared off the grass around it. The surface roots are chased out three to five feet from the trunk and taken eight to twelve inches down. What runs deeper than that is left where it lies, and the soil breaks it down over the next three to five years without anything showing above. After stump grinding the hole is full and level on the day, and what the hole does through its first season is covered under what happens to the hole. Before any of that, though, comes the price.

The question King owners ask first

The first question is the price, and the price follows the stump's width at ground level. Every extra inch across the base means another pass of the wheel, more time on the machine and more chips to manage, which is why we ask for the width before anything else. Hardwood matters second, since oak and hickory take longer at a given width than pine does, and a stump behind a gate is a longer setup than one beside the drive. Two or three stumps on one visit share the one trip, so they are quoted together. The whole visit is quoted before we start, with no surprise charges after, and the width bands behind a stump grinding cost are on our page on what stump grinding costs. The same quote runs in the towns next door.

More in the towns next door

The same round covers the towns next door. The trailer that comes to King out of Lewisville makes the same stops in Tobaccoville, Rural Hall, Germanton and Pinnacle, and the visit is no different in any of them. The three towns below have a page of their own.

The same round takes in Walkertown

The round that covers King covers Walkertown as well. Stump grinding across the wide yards of that town is set out on its own page, under wide yards in Walkertown.

The same round takes in Kernersville

The round that covers King covers Kernersville as well. Where several trees came down together, stump grinding the lot of them in one visit is the subject of the page on several stumps in Kernersville.

The same round takes in Clemmons

The round that covers King covers Clemmons as well. Stump grinding in the yards there, and on the lots being cleared beside them, is the page on yards and lots in Clemmons.

Booking a King job

A King job is booked on the same call as any other. Tell us how wide the stump is across the base, whether it is oak, hickory or something softer, and how we get the machine to it; the whole visit is quoted on that call, and we show up when we say we will. The tree stump work, grinding included, starts from our home page on tree stump grinding.

What neighbors say about the visit

Tommy came out the same week and took the old maple right down below the lawn. He raked it level before he left and you cannot tell where it stood.

Dana, Lewisville

We had three of them and a mess of raised roots along the drive. All of it went in one visit and the spoil went back into the holes.

R., Clemmons

Needed a big pine out before the new turf went down. Quoted over the phone, done two days later, and the spot was left flat and ready.

Oak or hickory, it ends up under the lawn.
